In its most ancient form, the character for “origin” appears as yuan in oracle bone script—like a spring emerging from a cliff face,
engraving early humanity’s contemplation of the beginning of life.
(Guanzi · Shui Di: “Water is the blood and vital energy of the earth, flowing through it like veins.”)

It is at once the literal beginning of water, and a fundamental inquiry into how all existence comes into being.

Throughout history, this inquiry has unfolded in diverse forms:

In Buddhism and Bön, “origin” is seen as a dance between nature and mind.
Daoism speaks of the Dao as the source—yet one that cannot be named.
Confucianism grounds itself in human relations, adapting principles according to time and context.
Science advances through exploration, tempered by humility.
Literature and art, meanwhile, embrace the beauty of the unanswerable.

Humanity’s questioning of ultimate meaning resembles Sisyphus and his stone:
as he pushes it uphill, he is fixated on arrival;
as it rolls back down, he is left wondering why.

Yet Buddhism has long offered its insight:
all phenomena—including forms of life—are in constant flux, arising and dissolving.
There is no eternal subject, nor a fixed “origin.”

Thus, is the search for origins an expedition of thought,
or a condition of action from which we cannot escape?

When we release our attachment to definitive answers,
we may begin to hear the wisdom of those who came before us:
“The essence of truth is freedom.”

“Origin” is not a fixed endpoint,
but a dynamic beginning.
Not an isolated answer,
but an open system.

It should not be bound by the chains of logic.

Rather, it invites us—through the lens of positional awareness—
to perceive its textures across nature, society, and the realm of spirit;
and through aesthetic practice,
to feel its warmth in the convergence of sensation and reason.
